How to Properly Hook Up Your Fifth Wheel Trailer: Step-by-Step Instructions
Properly hooking up your fifth wheel trailer is essential for safe towing and a smooth journey. This article outlines the necessary steps to connect your fifth wheel to your tow vehicle effectively.
Step-by-Step Hookup Instructions
- Prepare the Trailer:
- Place wheel chocks behind the tires to prevent movement. Raise the stabilizer/leveling jacks to stabilize the trailer.
- Adjust Landing Gear:
- Adjust the landing gear jacks until the coach is level and ready for hooking to the tow vehicle.
- Prepare the Tow Vehicle:
- Lower the tailgate on the truck. Release the fifth wheel lock handle on the tow vehicle.
- Position the Tow Vehicle:
- Back up slowly to align the tow vehicle so that the fifth wheel is within 12 to 15 inches of accepting the kingpin. Once aligned, close and latch the tailgate.
- Engage the Kingpin:
- Continue backing the truck slowly until the kingpin engages the fifth wheel and locks automatically. Engage the hitch lock and secure it with a padlock or pin for added security.
- Connect Safety Equipment:
- Connect the 7-way cord from the RV to the tow vehicle. Attach the breakaway switch cable to the tow vehicle. Ensure the breakaway switch pin is properly inserted into the housing; if it has been pulled out, reinstall it securely.
- Final Checks:
- Check all lights on both the trailer and the tow vehicle, including Running lights, Turn signals, Brake lights, and Backup lights.
- Finalize Setup:
- Completely raise the landing gear and stabilizer jacks and store the wheel chocks.
- Test Trailer Brakes:
- Pull forward and check the operation of the trailer brakes using the hand control. Ensure they function correctly according to the manufacturer’s specifications for setting the brake control.
By following these steps, you can ensure that your fifth wheel trailer is securely hooked up to your tow vehicle, enhancing safety and performance during your travels. Always refer to your specific fifth wheel and hitch manufacturer's instructions for any additional requirements. Safe travels!
