Monitor Panel Guide for First-Time Campers: Understanding Battery, Tank Levels, and More
In this guide, we’ll cover the essentials of using your RV’s monitor panel, including what it controls, how to read its displays, and how it operates. Monitor panels can vary across Keystone models, so it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with your specific panel before heading out on your adventure.
Understanding the Monitor Panel Components
Battery Monitoring
- Purpose: The battery monitor displays the state of charge for the RV’s 12-volt battery or batteries.
- Reading Levels: The battery charge range is typically displayed as Low, Fair, Good, or Charged. On iN-Command panels, this may be shown as a specific voltage level instead.
- Tip: Always ensure your battery is fully charged before using the monitor panel to ensure accurate readings and proper panel function.
Holding Tank Levels
- Purpose: The panel shows the fill levels of your holding tanks, including Black, Grey, and Fresh water tanks.
- Display Range: Tank levels are shown in thirds—Empty, One-Third, Two-Thirds, and Full.
- Cleaning Indicator: If a tank level remains the same after dumping, it likely needs cleaning. For more information, see our video on “Understanding Your RV Holding Tanks.”
Water Pump Control
- Purpose: The water pump switch activates the pump to use fresh water from your holding tank when city water is unavailable.
- Note: If connected to city water, you should turn off the water pump to avoid unnecessary wear. Check out our video on “Water Supply” for further details.
Water Heater Switch
- Purpose: The switch for your gas/electric water heater allows you to turn it on or off, either for gas, electric, or both.
- Location: Water heater switch placements may vary, sometimes appearing as a separate switch panel depending on your RV model.
Important Tips
- Battery Charge: Always start with a fully charged battery to ensure that your monitor panel functions correctly.
- Familiarization: Since monitor panel styles and features differ among Keystone models, review your specific panel’s layout before your first trip.
