How to Replace Interior Trim in Your RV: Step-by-Step Guide
Over time, the interior trim can become worn or damaged, and replacing it is a straightforward way to keep your RV looking its best.
Tools Required:
- Pin nailer with 1-inch pin nails
- Putty stick
- Trim shears
- Pin nail punch
- Finishing nails (optional)
- Hammer
- Putty (if applicable)
Step-by-Step Directions:
1. Remove the Old Trim
- Carefully remove the old trim using a putty stick or flathead screwdriver. Take care not to damage the wall panel material.
- Gently work the trim free from the pin nails at each pinhole location. If any pin nails come out with the trim, be mindful not to injure yourself when discarding the old piece.
- Optionally, you can either remove any leftover pin nails or use a hammer to tap them flush against the wall to ensure the new trim lays flat.
2. Measure and Cut the New Trim
- Lay the old piece of trim on top of the new one for accurate measurement. Leave an extra inch at the end so you can trim it off during installation for a precise fit.
- Set the bottom end flush to the floor and position the trim vertically along the seam you wish to cover.
3. Attach the New Trim
- Begin securing the trim with two 1-inch, 18-gauge pin nails using a pin nailer. If you prefer, you can also use finishing nails and a hammer for this step.
- Hold the seam in place and use the pin nailer to secure the trim every 8 to 10 inches as you move up the wall.
4. Trim the Excess
- Once the trim is attached, trim the top end to fit under the adjacent flat trim. Use your trim shears to cut off the excess, cutting slightly long at first to ensure a proper fit.
- After trimming, use the pin nailer to secure the rest of the trim, continuing to space the nails 8 to 10 inches apart.
5. Finishing Touches
- If any pin nails are sticking out after the trim is installed, use a pin nail punch and a hammer to tap them flush.
- Apply putty over the pinholes for a smooth, finished look.
