Essential RV Slide-Out Care: Maintenance Tips from Expert Technicians
Master RV technicians Matt and Bart share valuable tips to help you maintain your RV slide-outs, ensuring smooth operation and preventing potential damage during your travels. Proper maintenance not only extends the life of your slide-outs but also enhances the overall performance of your RV.
Roof Inspection
Twigs, leaves, and pine needles can lift the sweep seals, allowing water to seep in. Regularly clean off the slide-out roof using a small broom or brush to remove debris. During this process, inspect the roof membrane for any signs of damage. If damage occurs, the membrane can often be patched. Check the sealants on the moldings and sweep seals, and make repairs as needed. Allow new sealants to cure before washing the roof.
Visual Inspection of the Slide-Out Box
Ensure the slide-out box is clean and free of debris. Inspect the rubber sweeps to confirm they are clean and undamaged. Keystone RV does not recommend using any lubricants, as they can attract dirt. If the sweeps are damaged, visit your local dealer for replacements to prevent water intrusion. Note that when it rains, residual water may remain on the slide-out, as the sweeps are not designed to act as squeegees. Simply wipe up any excess water with a towel.
Sealant Condition
Sealants protect areas where components are installed, such as corner moldings and window seals. Over time, these seals may require touch-ups, which is a routine part of RV ownership. Regularly inspect and maintain the sealants on your slide-out, paying special attention to window seals. Lack of maintenance is the leading cause of slide-out leaks. We recommend inspecting your seals and sealants frequently, repairing or replacing them as needed, and allowing them to cure before washing.
Underneath the Slide-Out
Check the floor covering under the slide-out for cleanliness and damage. Inspect the hardware to ensure it’s clean and free of damage, tightening any loose screws or bolts. A clean, dry, and damage-free slide-out is crucial to preventing long-term issues.
Cleaning RV Slide-Outs
Debris can collect on slide-outs, especially during extended stays. Depending on your region and campsite, washing the slide-out box may be required more often. Clean your RV slide-outs on a clear, warm day using RV-approved cleaning supplies. Keystone RV advises against using power washers, as they can damage your RV’s sealants and graphics. If you're unsure about cleaning products, contact your dealer for recommendations.
