How to Replace a 12V Light in Your RV: A DIY Guide
Whether you're upgrading to LED lights or fixing a broken fixture due to an accident, replacing a 12V light in your RV can be a straightforward DIY task. Follow this guide to learn how to replace your RV's 12V light fixture efficiently and safely.
Tools and Materials Needed
Before you begin, gather the following items:
- Square bit screwdriver or screw gun with #2 square bit
- Wire cutters
- Wire nuts (for 10 to 14 gauge wire)
- Flashlight or table lamp (for visibility)
- New light fixture
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Safety First:
- To avoid blowing a fuse, disconnect power to your unit. If equipped, turn off the battery disconnect switch, disconnect the 12V battery, and unplug the RV from shore power.
- Remove the Light Cover:
- Gently twist and remove the cover from the light fixture.
- Unscrew the Old Fixture:
- Use your screw gun with a #2 square bit to remove the screws holding the light in place. Once loose, carefully pull the fixture down to expose the wiring.
- Identify the Wires:
- You will see two types of wires:
- Solid White Wire: Ground or negative connection
- White Wire with a Colored Stripe: Hot wire (positive connection)
- Compare these with the wires on your new light fixture to confirm which is which.
- Disconnect the Old Light:
- Cut the wires free from the old light fixture using wire cutters.
- Prepare the New Light:
- Use wire strippers to remove up to ½ inch of sheathing from both the factory wires and the new light wires.
- Connect the New Light:
- Twist the positive wire (colored stripe) from the ceiling or wall with the positive wire from the new light using a wire nut. Connect the negative wire (solid white) to the corresponding wire on the new light in the same manner. Secure each connection with electrical tape for added safety.
- Reinstall the Light Fixture:
- Push the wire connections and any excess wire back into the ceiling, allowing the new light fixture to sit flush against the surface. Using the screws you removed earlier, reinstall the light fixture back into the ceiling panel. Be careful not to over-tighten, as this may strip the screws.
- Replace the Light Cover:
- Reattach the cover of the light fixture.
- Reconnect Power:
- Plug the shore cord back in, reconnect the 12V battery, or turn the battery disconnect switch back on.
- Test the New Light:
- Turn on the new light to ensure it works correctly.
Replacing a 12V light in your RV is a manageable task that can enhance your vehicle's lighting and overall safety. With the right tools and guidance, you can confidently tackle this DIY project. Enjoy your upgraded lighting!
