How to Replace a Basic Hinge Vent Lid in Your RV: Step-by-Step Guide
We guide you through the process of replacing a basic hinge vent lid in your RV. Whether your vent lid is damaged due to overhanging branches, discolored, brittle, chipped, or cracked, or you simply want to replace it during regular roof maintenance, this guide will provide you with the information you need.
Tools Needed
Before we begin, here are the tools you will need for this job:
- Screw gun
- #2 Phillips bit
- #2 Square bit
- Replacement vent lid
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Open the Vent Lid
Start by opening the vent lid inside your RV.
Step 2: Remove the Vent Garnish
Using the screw gun with the number two square bit, remove the four screws in the vent garnish. Carefully pull down the garnish and set it aside for later use.
Step 3: Remove the Crank Handle
Next, use the Phillips screwdriver or screw gun to remove the crank handle.
Step 4: Remove the Vent Screen
To remove the vent screen, pinch the two sides or use a standard screwdriver to gently pry it out. If your specific vent has screws holding the screen in place, make sure to remove those screws before proceeding.
Step 5: Detach the Fan Assembly
If your vent includes a fan assembly, gently remove it and let it hang to the side.
Step 6: Remove the Operator Assembly
Remove the two screws holding the operator assembly in place, detach it from the lid, and set it aside for later.
Step 7: Replace the Vent Lid on the Roof
Now it's time to head to the roof. Don’t forget to bring your replacement lid! Simply flip the old lid over until it releases from the hinge, then install the new lid.
Step 8: Reinstall the Components
Once the new lid is in place, return to the inside of your RV to finish up:
- Reinstall the Operator Assembly: Start by installing the operator assembly.
- Reattach the Fan Assembly: Next, reinstall the fan assembly.
- Reinsert the Vent Screen: Place the vent screen back into position.
- Install the Crank Handle: Finally, attach the crank handle.
Step 9: Test Your Work
After everything is reinstalled, check your work by closing and opening the vent lid to ensure it functions correctly.
Step 10: Complete the Installation
With the vent lid working as designed, finish by reinstalling the garnish.
