How to Replace a Compartment Door Strut: Step-by-Step Guide
Over time, the struts that hold up your RV compartment door or bed top may begin to fail or stop working altogether. If you're facing this issue, it’s important to replace the strut with the correct type for safe and reliable operation. This guide will help you replace a compartment door strut effectively.
Key Considerations:
- Strut Length and Weight: When replacing a strut, it's crucial to match the length and weight capacity (usually listed in pounds) of the original strut.
- Tools Required: Small flat head screwdriver, New strut
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Prepare the Area
- Open the compartment door completely.
- Have someone hold the door open for you or use a board to prop it up safely.
2. Remove the Old Strut
- At each end of the strut, you’ll notice a half-circle compression washer.
- Top of the Strut: Use the small flat head screwdriver to pry the compression washer up to release it. Once released, pull the strut free from the ball bracket.
- Bottom of the Strut: Follow the same steps to release and remove the strut from the bottom ball bracket.
3. Install the New Strut
- When you receive the new strut, you’ll notice the compression washers are already seated and clamped down. This is correct; you do not need to push them back up.
- Top Installation: Place the top of the new strut onto the ball bracket. Use the palm of your hand to push the strut onto the ball until it snaps into place. Give the strut a gentle tug to ensure it is securely attached.
- Bottom Installation: You may need to adjust the compartment door up or down to align the strut with the ball bracket. Once aligned, press the bottom of the strut onto the ball bracket.
4. Check the Operation
- After replacing the strut, check the operation of the compartment door to ensure it opens and closes smoothly.
