Understanding GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) in Your RV

In this article, we’ll explore what a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) is, its purpose in your RV, and how to properly test it to ensure safety.

What is a GFCI?

A GFCI is a safety device installed in your RV's bathroom, kitchen, and exterior receptacles. Its primary function is to detect even the slightest electrical faults or "shorts" at these outlets. If a fault is detected, the GFCI instantly disconnects the electrical current, preventing potential injury or electrocution.

  • How It Works: The GFCI functions like a circuit breaker and features a reset button on the front of the receptacle. It is typically found in the bathroom or kitchen areas of your RV.

Importance of GFCI Protection

GFCIs are essential for protecting you from electrical hazards in wet areas, where the risk of electric shock is higher. Regular testing and maintenance of GFCI devices can help ensure your safety while using electrical outlets in your RV.

Testing Your GFCI

It is recommended to test your GFCI receptacles at least once a month or before every trip. Here’s how to properly test your GFCI:

  1. Locate the GFCI: Find the GFCI receptacle in your RV.
  2. Push the TEST Button: This action will disconnect the power from all outlets protected by the GFCI. You should see the RESET button pop out.
  3. Check Power: Ensure that power is off at all outlets protected by the GFCI.
  4. Restore Power: Push the RESET button back in to restore power.
  5. Confirm the Test: The test is successful if the RESET button remains pushed in.

Troubleshooting Malfunctions

If the RESET button does not pop out during testing, the GFCI may be malfunctioning. In this case, do not use any outlets on this circuit, as protection has been lost. Contact your dealer for assistance if you suspect the GFCI is not functioning correctly.
